The Nature and Nurture of Gender

Nature- Males and females are slight variations on one single form of person. To prove this, seven weeks after conception, the fetus looks exactly the same no matter what sex it is. After this, genes determine the sex of the future child. The sex of a child is determined by the twenty third chromosome in your body. These are called sex chromosomes. The mother of the child always gives an X chromosome, which is unisex, and the father gives an X, making the child a girl, or a Y chromosome, making the child a boy. From this point on, the fetus develops into either a boy or a girl, creating certain parts designated to boys or girls.
Nurture- In society, gender roles affect the way women and men are viewed and how they are supposed to behave within the society. These roles provide guidelines that can help create smooth social encounters because the decisions on who does what are already predetermined. In different societies, gender roles are viewed in varying ways and the expectations of each gender is different.
